The Graduate Counselor oversees academic progression and assists graduate students in navigating the matriculation to degree completion process. The Graduate Counselor manages all academic forms which include but is not limited to, candidacy for degree completion, comprehensive examination, program adjustments, and transfer credits. In addition, the Graduate Counselor works with the Dean of the Graduate College regarding academic administration and fosters a rapport with graduate students during their graduate school career. The Graduate Counselor reports directly to the Dean of the Graduate College.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Counsel students on the proper procedures to follow in the degree pursuit as well as other personal concerns.
- Prepare and send out application results.
- Make decisions regarding graduation update applications.
- Review all applications for graduation.
- Review all applications to take the comprehensive examination and send out application results.
- Conduct audits and clear candidates for graduation.
- Assist Program Coordinators in reviewing files of all students admitted in a provisional or probational status each semester.
- Prepare the documentation regarding the current academic status of students who were admitted on a provisional or probational basis and submit to the Graduate College Dean for review.
- Review the grade comprehensive report at the end of each semester to assess the academic status of all currently enrolled graduate students.
- Prepare academic probation letters and send out correspondence.
- Review all theses/dissertations for adherence to guidelines.
- Attend meetings at the Dean’s request.
- Provide leadership and assistance as necessary during the registration period.
- Serve as advisor to the Organization of Graduate Students.
- Plan and coordinate the annual Graduate College Open House.
- Assist in the development of program literature.
- Provide leadership to the construction of Dates to Remember.
- Assist in the development and revision of forms.
- Maintain line of communication with program coordinators regarding student issues.
- Plan and coordinate New Graduate Student Orientation.
- Prepare job description for and supervise graduate assistants.
- Facilitate the completion of CGS and SED Surveys.
- Send out Exit Surveys (Graduate College Tracker) each semester.
