The J-1 visa for exchange visitors is a nonimmigrant visa that is designed around the use of sanctioned programs that act as sponsors instead of employers. Here is a quick list of some programs you can apply for under the J-1:

Finding a designated sponsor: Hampton University is a designated sponsor.
Obtain the form DS-2019 and SEVIS ID processing: 2 – 3 weeks
Completing the DS-160 and scheduling the interview: 2 – 4 weeks
Attending the J-1 visa interview with US embassy abroad.
Receiving the J-1 visa.
To maintain a J-1 visa in the USA, follow these guidelines:
Maintain a valid passport and renew it 6 months before expiration.
Request a Program Extension if you will not graduate by the Program End Date.
Keep your DS-2019 up to date.
Attend the school noted on your form DS-2019.
Maintain full-time enrollment.
Have health insurance coverage.
Contact the international office for approval before dropping below a full-time course load or withdraw.
J-1 exchange visitor scholars are eligible to transfer from institution A to B with a valid J-1 visa and active DS-2019.
Extend the end date of the J-1 program:
To extend your J-1 visa program, follow these steps:
An application is required for a J-1 visa extension.
Upon approval, receive a new DS-2019 form indicating the new expiration date.
Your program sponsor’s, Hampton University responsible officer will evaluate your eligibility for an extension.
The end date listed on your Form DS-2019 is the end date of your J-1 Exchange Visitor program.
