The Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications
“Give light and the people will find their own way.”
This motto was coined by the Scripps Howard Foundation and has been the guiding inspiration of Hampton University’s Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications since its inception in 2002. Uniquely designed as a modern, symbolic lighthouse, the Scripps Howard School was built with a mission to produce ethical and competitive media and communication leaders equipped to practice with excellence, innovation and integrity in a multimedia world while adhering to the core principles of journalism and communications.
The Scripps Howard School is equipped with:
- Cyclorama television studio
- Audiovisual and audio-only podcast rooms
- 24-hour FM radio broadcast station with digital streaming capability to iHeart Radio
- State-of-the-art classrooms equipped with Promethean boards
- Multimedia stadium-style auditorium
- Wi-Fi connections throughout the two-story stand-alone building
Scripps Howard School students have full-access to modernized amenities in the school, and highly-skilled and experienced professors. With professional backgrounds varying from The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, Inside Edition, Atlantic Records, MTV Networks, Cox Communications, CBS and PBS, each professor teaches classes of no more than 15 – 20 students, allowing each student personalized attention and the opportunity to establish valuable relationships.
Students in the Scripps Howard School are immersed in journalism and communications education and experience inside and outside of the classroom. They become skilled in Final Cut Pro, Adobe Suite software programs and digital radio operation. Students gain in-depth knowledge of professional industry programs and process and many buttress their curriculum by participating in student chapters of professional organizations, including the:
- National Association of Black Journalists
- Public Relations Student Society of America
- Brand757, a student-run, for-profit public relations firm comprised of student leaders
- Kappa Tau Alpha (National Honor Society for Journalism and Communications majors in the top 10 percent of their class
The Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications has earned a reputation of excellence and achievement among various academic and professional communities. Students and graduates have held internships and started professional careers at leading media and public relations organizations such as Google, Bloomberg News, NPR, Radio One, The Washington Post, St. Petersburg Times, Essence Magazine, Time Magazine, ESPN, USA Today, Edelman, Ogilvy, Burson-Marsteller, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, and others.
