From Anchors to Flight: United Airlines Partnership Secures a Path of Transformation for Aviation Students

The promise of aviation at Hampton University pairs the steadiness of anchors with the adventure of flight. United Airlines officially announced the expansion of its dynamic Aviate program to the department of aviation at Hampton’s School of Engineering, Architecture, and Aviation (SEAA). This exciting partnership will empower a new generation of leaders to take to the skies, casting a colorful future for the world of aviation.

Anchored Dreams Take Flight
United held an official launch day on campus to celebrate and establish rapport with aviation students and faculty. The launch included a presentation, panel, and a networking lunch for students to deeper connect with United reps. Aviate, which was launched by United Airlines in 2019 offers students a direct route to flying with the airline, including the training and support necessary to earn their wings. Upon successful completion, students transition to United as a First Officer, pending they meet all hiring requirements. Aviation Flight Safety Manager at Hampton, Orestes Gooden shared, “We are all excited for our students and want to continue fostering long lasting partnerships to put them in the best position to succeed.”

The Skies Belong to You
United’s commitment to diversity and inclusion shines through this program. Devin Cobb, United’s Director of Diversity Equity and Inclusion, shed light on the importance of the partnership taking off at Hampton and the industry call to continually diversify the skies. “Diversity isn’t just an initiative here [at United], it’s how we do business. We deliver our best when we bring in leaders from different races, backgrounds, gender, and thought,” Cobb shared.

Senior Program Manager of Aviate, Captain Monica Frain shared a special sentiment with the young women in the room: “When I first began my aviation career, I was the only woman. I was the only woman in my cohort and just about every other important space you can think of, yet I was always valued, heard, and chosen. Since then, I have seen an increase in women in aviation – so, that tells me two things: United Airlines champions diversity and there is still much work to be done.”

Flying Full Circle
Maurice “Moe” Mullen and Captain David Simpson returned to their Home by the Sea to usher in the new partnership. Moe is a 2007 Aviation Management graduate and member of the Quintessence 6 class. The Aviate Partnership Launch was his first time returning to campus as an alumnus for what he will always remember as his “full circle moment.” Mullen reflected, “Facilitating this partnership and being able to return to my Home by the Sea for the program launch reunited me with my roots and put a challenge on me to maintain the relationship on both sides – as a leader at United and a Hampton alum.” Captain David Simpson is an HU graduate and is lovingly known as one of the “Hampton 6”, a group of six students who graduated from Hampton Aviation together and are now captains at United Airlines.

Each One, Teach One
In the room, flight instructors Tavis Garlington and Ellis Woodyard took in the moment with a sense of pride. The two graduated from Hampton Aviation in May and remember the nascent state of the department just four years ago. Since then, the Department of Aviation has grown from the grounds of the School of Engineering and Technology to the top of the newly named School of Engineering, Architecture & Aviation (SEAA).

As top candidates with every option at their fingertips, the two returned to Hampton to teach the next class. “When we were coming up in this program, we didn’t have flight instructors who looked like us, so being the ones to teach and offer students what we only hoped for is really special,” Garlington shared. Woodyard added, “We could have gone anywhere, but we decided to stay and pour back into the program that shaped us.”

Their choice to stay and mentor future aviators is not merely about teaching flight skills; it’s also about being visible role models for aspiring aviation professionals who may have longed to see individuals like themselves in such roles. Through their commitment to Hampton Aviation, Garlington and Woodyard are championing the cause of diversity and representation within the aviation industry, ensuring that the path to excellence in the skies is accessible to Black future aviators.

High Altitude
The School of Aviation is a center of excellence that elevates the industry standards of leadership, integrity, and service. As one of only 40 Aviation programs in the world accredited by the Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI), students are certain to embark on a world class experience with a competitive edge. For over three decades, Hampton Aviation graduates have dominated the industry as airport operators, pilots, and air traffic controllers with the pride of hailing from the first HBCU with a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved Air Traffic-Collegiate Training Initiative (AT-CTI) program.

The program offers three Bachelor of Science degrees:

· Flight Education – Minor in Aviation

· Aviation Management – Air Traffic Control

· Aviation Management – Airport Administration

Hampton Aviation alum praise the program for its low student-teacher ratio, rich history, close-knit community, and premier industry relationships that offer students an individualized learning experience and the support to enter the workforce as a preferred candidate.

Elevating Hampton Excellence
“The history that Hampton University has with United Airlines is golden. They [United] have 11 captains from our program. The pathway was already there but this partnership honors almost 30 years of excellence,” John Murray, Hampton Aviation Department Chair shared.

“We’ve produced the next generation of the “Hampton 6”, and we plan to have stories of the Hampton 16 to the Hampton 60. We’ve seen a 75% increase in enrollment because of stories like the Hampton 6 – our door hasn’t stopped knocking since,” Gooden and Murray added. The latest “6” are 2023 graduates Ellis Woodyard, Tavis Garlington, Griffin Weathers, Kerry White, Myles Divinity, and Thomas Brown – all future pilots thriving from airline partnerships that will position them to be the next generation of captains.

As the inaugural class of Aviate at Hampton University takes off, the aviation industry can be confident knowing that the future of flight has just become a lot more diverse and promising. United Airlines and Hampton University have come together to ensure that the sky is not the limit but the dream destination to an anchored journey in excellence.

Hampton University President Darrell K. Williams Has Released the Following Statement About Enhanced Security Measures on Campus

Hampton University President Darrell K. Williams Has Released the Following Statement About Enhanced Security Measures on Campus

Dear Hampton Family & Friends,

We look forward to welcoming alumni and guests for what will be a special Homecoming celebration.

President Darrell K. Williams and Mrs. Myra Richardson Williams

In light of recent tragic events that have occurred in and around our fellow HBCU campuses, in which our thoughts and prayers go out to all that were affected, we have implemented enhanced security protocols to ensure that our Homecoming weekend is as safe as possible.

Our Security Infrastructure

Upon my arrival in July 2022, I asked the Chief of Police to conduct a threat assessment to better understand our exposures and emergency response capabilities, and we have continued to build upon those findings. In fact, we have continuously invested in our security infrastructure. We have enhanced our security protocols, inclusive of the following:

1. Hampton University Police Department – Our first line of defense is our Hampton University police officers (HUPD) who are strategically positioned throughout our Home by the Sea, vigilantly canvassing 300-plus acres and monitoring over 100 buildings. They are, and will remain, on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We will increase the presence of police officers on campus with additional contracted security professionals. We will also increase the collaborative presence of municipal and state public safety partners, collectively dedicated to safeguarding against any potential incidents.

2. Weapons Detection System – We acquired a state-of-the-art ShotSpotter gunshot detection system that has been installed around campus. We are actively employing cutting-edge AI platforms that can identify concealed weapons through our existing camera network. These tools equip us to more accurately detect and respond to security threats. 3. Call Boxes – Nearly two dozen emergency call boxes stand guard along various pathways, poised to connect anyone in need directly to HUPD upon pressing the alert button. Each emergency phone is a metal box crowned with a luminescent blue light, clearly visible both day and night. To request emergency HUPD assistance, you need only to press the red button on any blue light phone, summoning HUPD to your location.

4. Security Cameras – More than 500 security cameras have been meticulously placed across campus, serving as formidable deterrents to criminal activity, and their recorded footage stands as a testament to our commitment to investigate any incidents when necessary.

5. LiveSafe App – The LiveSafe app ensures that you remain connected to emergency alerts and non-emergency notifications from the University. It also offers a two-way chat function, empowering you to promptly report any suspicious activity to HUPD. Please do not rely solely on social media posts for news and updates.

6. Pirate Notification System – HUPD has established the Pirate Notification System (PNS) to keep our community informed of any nearby emergency situations, including severe weather and traffic. It communicates via text, email, or phone call, ensuring that you are promptly apprised of any unfolding situations.

An Increased Investment

In 2022, Governor Youngkin authorized the Commonwealth of Virginia to allocate $1 million to help us increase our security profile and provide a secure and thriving environment for all who call Hampton their academic home. Your safety is our utmost priority, and together, we can ensure that Homecoming, and all our activities, remain joyous occasions for every member of our Hampton family.

Ways You Can Be Vigilant

While our location provides natural security barriers, we are prepared for any security and safety concerns. There are also actions you can take. Please review the following safety precautions, designed to help you mitigate your exposure to potential criminal activity during what is meant to be an enjoyable weekend.

1. Be Patient – We have meticulously prepared for your arrival next week. Homecoming will attract record crowds, disrupting normal parking and driving patterns. As you are driving on campus or waiting to gain entry to events, here are a few proactive steps to take to maintain a festive spirit:

  • Allow extra time to arrive on campus and enter the stadium on game day.
  • Encourage your visitors driving to campus to present their driver’s license at the guard station. Emphasize to passengers that this identification procedure is of equal significance to them.
  • Ensure that visitors check in at the front desk of residence halls as required.
  • Check your surroundings and rely on your instincts.
  • When venturing out after dark, travel with friends or call HUPD at 757-727-5300.
  • If you are celebrating Homecoming off-campus, do not hesitate to dial 911 in case of an emergency.

2. Be Responsible – We recognize the prevailing state of heightened alertness and have taken prudent security measures. These moments present an opportunity to bring our community closer and to make safer, informed personal decisions. We invite you to download the LiveSafe app. Please familiarize yourself with our clear bag policy and entrance procedures and notices about tailgating and game-day alcohol use. We invite you to join our efforts toward building an environment that is positive and enjoyable for all.

3. Be Responsive – Safety at Hampton University is a collective responsibility. Hamptonians safeguard the interests of fellow Hamptonians, and their guests. If you have information that requires an urgent response, please dial 757-727-5300 and request to speak with an officer or dial 911. Report all suspicious activities and vehicles to HUPD. You may also submit anonymous reports via the LiveSafe app. In situations demanding urgency, remember, “If you see something, say something” and do so with the utmost expediency.

We stand in solidarity with our fellow HBCU peers, steadfast in our mission to ensure a secure learning and living environment for all who enter our gates. Homecoming is an occasion to celebrate the essence of being a Pirate. With your cooperation, we can revel in this celebration safely, responsibly, and with profound respect for every member of our Hampton family.

We eagerly anticipate your return to your cherished Home by the Sea. Should you have any inquiries regarding Homecoming events, please do not hesitate to visit hamptonu.edu/homecoming.

The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation and Founder Taraji P. Henson Expand Partnership with Kate Spade New York to Bring Culturally Competent Mental Health Services to Women at Hampton University

To continue their shared goal of destigmatizing the mental health conversation in the Black community, The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation and kate spade new york bring the first-of-its-kind “She Care Wellness Pods” to a second HBCU campus this Fall.

NEW YORK, NY (September 13, 2023) This fall, The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation (BLHF) and kate spade new york proudly announce the expansion of their joint program, the “She Care Wellness Pods”, which aims to reach over 25,000 Black women on HBCU campuses with frontline mental wellness care. After a successful inaugural launch at Alabama State University in April of this year, BLHF and kate spade are expanding the initiative to a second HBCU campus location, Hampton University in Virginia.

Through this groundbreaking program for HBCU students, BLHF and kate spade new york, in partnership with trusted Hampton University community resources, bring access to mental health facilities and resources directly to Black women on campus. The multifaceted program features the opening of “She Care Wellness Pods – physical structures installed on campuses that offer a range of services, including:

  • Free mental health therapy sessions for female students experiencing an exacerbation of stress, anxiety and hopelessness.
  • Hangout spaces that allow students to connect with peers or avoid isolation and grief during the school year and vacation periods.
  • Unique programming including yoga, meditation, art and drama therapy, African dance, nutrition and more, all provided by certified practitioners.
  • Workshops that offer resources and tools for those who suffer with anxiety, sleep deprivation and insomnia.
  • Quiet spaces for silence, rest and respite to reset from daily stressors.

Founded in 2018, The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation’s mission is to eradicate the stigma around mental health in the Black community. As a leading Black mental health advocacy group, BLHF provides competent therapy and integrated wellness resources. For katespade new york, women’s empowerment has been at the forefront of the brand’s purpose for over a decade and remains a core pillar of the brand. This year, kate spade and the kate spade new york Foundation will invest $5 million in programming to further destigmatize the mental health conversation and continue to provide services to women and girls in need. By continuing to expand the “She Care Wellness Pods” initiative, the joint partnership aims to provide 25,000 Black women on HBCU college campuses with frontline mental healthcare.

“When we first had the idea to create the Boris L. Henson Foundation Self-Care Wellness Pods, I knew we had to start with women, and specifically women on HBCU campuses. I can remember through my own experiences with stress and anxiety, not having the adequate support to deal with my issues or the education to name what I was experiencing,” said BLHF Founder, Taraji P. Henson. “Black women, from a very young age, are taught to be strong and dismiss their own suffering,  tending to the needs of family and community often at the expense of their own well-being. The She Care Wellness pods seek to change this narrative,” says BLHF Executive Director, Tracie Jade. “Our shared vision and partnership with kate spade new york has been vital in promoting conversations and offering support to students to take care of their mental health, starting with our successful launch of She Care Wellness pods at Alabama State University. We are proud to open our second installment at Hampton University this fall,” Henson stated.

“At kate spade new york, we believe that mental health is foundational to women’s empowerment, and recognize that it has long been under-acknowledged, underfunded, and stigmatized.  We are committed to increasing accessibility of mental health resources to women and girls around the globe through our social impact work and trusted partners in this space,” said kate spade new york CEO and Brand President, Liz Fraser. “We are proud to expand our partnership with Taraji, Tracie and The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation. By offering space and resources dedicated to mental health, together we can create a positive difference for young women on HBCU campuses and in their communities.”

“The health and wellbeing of our Hampton University community is of the utmost importance,” Hampton University President Darrell K. Williams expressed. “We take a holistic approach to education and, as such, we are honored to partner with the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation and kate spade new york on the She Care Wellness Pods, positioning our students with additional resources for mental wellness, helping to prioritize the importance of mental health within our communities.

“Hampton University is proud to be a recipient of the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation’s Wellness Pods,” said Kristie Norwood, Ph.D., director, HU Student Counseling Center. “One out of five adults are affected by mental health diagnoses and 39% of college students experience a significant mental health issue. It is our mission, at the HU Student Counseling Center, to  help normalize therapy within the Black community, and to educate our students on the importance of self-care and mental health awareness. The Wellness Pods will be part of a multi-faceted approach to ensuring the health and wellness of our students.”

Each She Care Wellness Pod is designed to create an environment that stimulates joy, peace and serenity through intentional design and color selection. The mural is a reflection of each campuses’ unique identity, from the perspective of the student body.  One student is selected by each campus leadership team to design the mural that is painted on the outside of the containers.  The intention of the mural is to reflect the diversity of women and intersecting identities within the local study body.

“The piece I have created reflects the importance of watering yourself based upon what your body and mind need,” said Hampton University student and mural artist T’Kiyah Reeves. “As women, we must prioritize our wellness.  We must treat our minds with the same love, care, compassion and grace we would give to a tangible seedling to support its growth into something beautiful.”

As a member of kate spade new york’s Social Impact Council, which was established in January 2022, Taraji P. Henson, has continued her work with the global lifestyle brand to increase mental health resources. Alongside other social impact members, including Sofia Wylie and Jazz Thorton and Latham Thomas and more, the cohort brings unique expertise and work hand-in-hand with kate spade to propel positive change, and encourage more conversation, education and research around the cause.

The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation and kate spade new york will launch their second “She Care Wellness Pod” at Hampton University, a historically Black university in Hampton, Virginia. The on-campus mental health destination will officially open to Hampton University students on November 2, allowing the community to take advantage of increased mental health resources and access.

Expanding Affordable Broadband Access Takes Center Stage in Hampton, VA

Hampton University to serve as host for a Broadband Community Meeting Town Hall on Monday, October 2nd, at 6:00 PM at Student Center

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HAMPTON, VA – The Student Freedom Initiative (SFI), in collaboration with Hampton University and the City of Hampton, is set to host a transformative community event aimed at addressing the critical need for expanded affordable broadband access in the region.

The “Broadband Community Meeting Town Hall” is scheduled to take place on Monday, October 2nd, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, at the esteemed Hampton University Student Center, conveniently located at 135 Marshall Avenue, Hampton, VA 23668.

The primary objective of this landmark town hall meeting is threefold: to educate, inform, and engage the local community regarding the unprecedented funding opportunities stemming from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), signed into law in November 2021.

The IIJA is a legislative milestone designed to usher in essential infrastructure improvements, especially in communities that have historically been underserved and lack the fundamental resources needed for everyday life. Without active community involvement, there’s a risk that these crucial communities may once again be overlooked.

Highlighting the significance of this initiative, in June of this year, the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) unveiled an astounding $1.5 billion in funding aimed at closing the digital divide within the state of Virginia. These funds are allocated through the federal Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program under the IIJA.

The “Broadband Community Meeting Town Hall” promises to be an enlightening and empowering event that will shed light on the transformative potential of the IIJA and the funding opportunities it presents. By participating in this gathering, community members can play an active role in ensuring that Hampton, VA, and surrounding areas fully benefit from these critical resources.

The Student Freedom Initiative (SFI), a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, stands at the forefront of this transformative effort. SFI serves as a catalyst for enhancing freedom in both academic and life choices for students attending Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) by elevating their social and economic mobility. Through close collaboration with partner educational institutions and strategic allies, SFI addresses the wealth gap by promoting affordable access to higher education, offering hands-on professional and life training opportunities, delivering integrated student services, and enhancing technological resources. These efforts not only support students in achieving future personal and professional success on a global scale but also bolster participating institutions, making them more resilient and competitive as pillars within their respective communities.

At around a dozen schools across at least seven states, the Vice President will bring thousands of students together around the fight for reproductive freedom, common sense gun safety laws, climate action, voting rights, LGBTQ+ equality, and teaching America’s full history.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON Thursday, September 7, 2023 – As students across the nation return to school, Vice President Kamala Harris will embark on a month-long college tour throughout America to mobilize young people in the ongoing fight for fundamental freedoms and rights. She is set to visit around a dozen campuses in at least seven states as she brings together thousands of students for high-energy, large-scale events. The Vice President’s flurry of “Fight for Our Freedoms College Tour” stops will focus on key issues that disproportionately impact young people across the country – from reproductive freedom and gun safety to climate action, voting rights, LGBTQ+ equality, and book bans.

“This generation is critical to the urgent issues that are at stake right now for our future,” said Vice President Harris. “It is young leaders throughout America who know what the solutions look like and are organizing in their communities to make them a reality. Vice President Harris’s “Fight for Our Freedoms College Tour” will include visits to historically Black colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, community colleges, apprenticeship programs, and state schools. The Vice President will highlight how the Biden-Harris Administration has delivered for young people, outline the work ahead to protect fundamental freedoms, and hear directly from students who are organizing on the frontlines of these fights. She will also urge attendees to register to vote, use their voice, and stay engaged.

This series of college tour events is a continuation of the Vice President’s recent travel, and comes on the heels of her Summer of Action that included visits to 17 states. Vice President Harris has already been to 11 college campuses this year after traveling to 14 schools in 2022.
