Vice President for Research

Dr. Neelam Azad, University Endowed Professor of Pharmacy, is the Vice President for Research at Hampton University (HU). Dr. Azad oversees HU’s research enterprise and manages units responsible for administration of sponsored projects, for research and regulatory compliance, as well as for interdisciplinary academic research centers. The Office of the Vice President for Research acts as a liaison with all constituents on matters that relate to research and innovation at HU.

Dr. Azad joined HU in 2008 for her first academic appointment in the School of Pharmacy as an Assistant Professor and rose through the ranks to become a tenured professor in 2019. She possesses a wide range of experiences across many facets of the academic enterprise, having served as the Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences for eight years and briefly as the Assistant Vice President for Research and Director of the Cancer Research Center. Dr. Azad has secured funding for multiple investigator-initiated research projects, multidisciplinary grants, student training programs, and community outreach projects. Dr. Azad is well-published and has earned numerous honors and awards throughout her career.

Dr. Azad’s focus is on the current and future health of the University’s research enterprise. As part of her strategic initiatives portfolio, she organizes faculty teams on developing new ideas and works with them on securing funding. Dr. Azad is committed to developing interdisciplinary research initiatives and establishing core resources with the goal of strengthening and expanding the research capacity at Hampton University.
