Dr. Ralph Charlton

Professor and Chair

Biography

For seven years, Dr. Ralph Charlton has served as Chair of Hampton University’s Department of Sports Science and Wellness, overseeing four academic majors and more than 300 students. Since 2002, he has directed departmental growth, implemented curriculum innovations, and fostered a student-centered environment.

Dr. Charlton instructs courses in sport management, marketing, finance, facility management, and career development. Under his leadership, students have completed over 10,000 service hours. His NCAA-supported research on the influence of institutional culture at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) demonstrates his commitment to equity and academic excellence.

Dr. Charlton earned a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration and an M.Ed. in Counselor Education from the College of William & Mary. He also holds an M.S. in Parks, Recreation, and Leisure Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Virginia. Prior to joining Hampton University, he taught at Christopher Newport University, where he developed courses in recreation leadership, sport management, and wellness education.

In addition to his academic leadership, Dr. Charlton is co-owner of B-Defined Personal Training & Wellness in Williamsburg, Virginia. The studio has provided personal training, group exercise, and nutrition services for over 20 years. His experience in coaching, leadership, and sports marketing informs his holistic approach to education and community wellness.

As Chair, Dr. Charlton fosters a collaborative culture emphasizing innovation and interconnectedness. He connects sports science with community health through interdisciplinary courses and promotes cooperation between academic and local wellness initiatives. His integrated strategies enhance faculty collaboration, student engagement with the community, and both personal and professional development within the department.
