Department Majors

Political Science

Political Science is the study of politics: government, law, political behavior, public policy and political philosophy. The Political Science program has a curriculum that is designed primarily to afford broad modern training in the study of political institutions and political behavior for students in the liberal arts and majors planning graduate work. It also affords pre-professional training for law, business, public relations or work in the mass media, domestic and foreign governmental service, teaching, the military, and a variety of active roles in politics.

History

History serves the university community by providing general education and core curriculum courses in history, geography, philosophy, and religion. The aim of the department is to give students an understanding and appreciation of the evolution and characteristics of world civilizations, cultures and philosophies. History majors study a broad range of subjects: African American, African, Digital, Women’s, Asian, and Comparative to focus their studies to have a deeper understanding of the subject areas between past and present. Most of our students explore and interpret events and eras while possessing strong analytical, research, writing, digital, and linguistic skills. The degree provides training for law, primary and secondary education, museum studies, archival work, the military, governmental service, and a variety of roles in the private and public sector.

International Studies

International Studies is an interdisciplinary study of history, politics, culture, language, and society. The International Studies program has a curriculum that is designed to afford training in either International Relations or Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Students study a broad range of topics including foreign policy, African and Asian history and politics, geography, languages, economics, global systems, and encouraged to study abroad. Students are also guided in their electives to help complement their future goals. The degree provides training for law, the military, the foreign service, competitive international careers, business and economic sectors, and the security sector.

African American Studies

African American Studies program will play a vital role in reclaiming and preserving the rich heritage, traditions, and intellectual contributions of African Americans that have often been marginalized in mainstream narratives. The curriculum is interdisciplinary covering African American literature, music, art, religion, and philosophy, thereby highlighting the profound influence of African American culture on the broader American identity. Our students will gain a deeper appreciation for cultural resilience and creativity that emerged despite centuries of oppression. As noted by Robinson and Ellis (2023), this discipline affirms Black identity and dignity, while fostering cross-cultural understanding and respect among diverse student populations.
