Dr. Eteri Tsintsadze-Maass (a.k.a. Dr. Etuna) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and History at Hampton University, where she teaches international relations and comparative politics courses. Her research focuses on international relations, national identity narratives, ontological security, and the politics of post-Soviet states. She has published articles on the psychological underpinnings of terrorist radicalization, the effects of national identities on states’ threat perceptions and security choices, and the social construction of state survival. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in the European Journal of International Security, Global Studies Quarterly, Terrorism and Political Violence, and Georgetown University Press. Currently, Dr. Tsintsadze-Maass is working on projects exploring states’ responses to major crises and associated insecurities, vicarious identification among foreign fighters, the effects of the memory of past crises in shaping current resistance movements, and the emancipatory power of social movements during democratic backsliding. Her long-term project is a book manuscript based on her dissertation: Why Weak State Balance: National Mobilization and the Security Strategies of Post-Soviet States.
Dr. Tsintsadze-Maass is a board member and the chair of the Great Decisions committee at the World Affairs Council of Hampton Roads. Prior to joining Hampton University, she served as Assistant Director of the Graduate Program in International Studies (GPIS) at Old Dominion University, where she also taught in the Department of Political Science and Geography. Dr. Tsintsadze-Maass holds a PhD from the University of Kentucky, with primary specialization in international relations and secondary specialization in comparative politics. She has also earned an MA in International Peace Studies from the University of Notre Dame and a BA in Psychology from Tbilisi State University.
