Department of Counseling

The Hampton University Department of Counseling is a nationally accredited program through the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Programs (CACREP). Since its launch in 1982, the Department of Counseling has prepared counselors to address social justice issues and societal needs by staying cutting and edge and innovative, including the addition of a online doctoral program in Counselor Education and Supervision.  The Department seeks to create professional counselors who are leaders and advocates, and change agents within their communities and school settings at local, national, and international levels.

Department Overview

Department of Counseling Admission requirements:

  • Completed application
  • $50 non-refundable fee
  • An official transcript from each college/university attended
  • Personal Statement
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Resume (Counseling and Certificate in Sport Leadership applicants only)
  • Duolingo English Test, TOEFL, or IELTS (Applicants whose native language is not English)

ENG 503 English Composition for Graduate Students is required if the following minimum test scores are not met:

  • Duolingo English Test < 120; TOEFL iBT < 87
  • TOEFL PBT < 525; TOEFL CBT < 19
  • IELTS Academic < 6.5; MCAT Verbal < 6.5 & N on essay
  • DAT Reading Comprehension < 13)
