Dr. Idonia Barrett

Biography

Dr. Idonia K. Barrett is an assistant professor at Hampton University, having served in the newly renamed Department of Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Homeland Security for over a decade. Originally from New Rochelle, NY, Dr. Barrett is a graduate of Hampton University (O Phi O XIII) in the Department of Sociology, earning a bachelor’s in Sociology with a minor in Criminal

Justice/Criminology. Dr. Barrett then received her MA in Criminal Justice, with a concentration in Criminal Law and Procedure from John Jay School of Criminal Justice in New York, NY, and an MPhil and PhD in Human Services with a concentration in Criminal Justice from Walden University.

Dr. Barrett has coordinated study abroad trips to London, England, and Cuba to expand her students’ cultural and academic experiences. She has also created and facilitated numerous seminars and conferences to promote and highlight community issues and support the student body’s budding talent. Most notably, she is the creator and coordinator of the Art of Hip-Hop Conference, which is anticipated to return in the near future.

Lastly, Dr. Barrett’s research interests focus on the impact of incarceration on the family, offender reintegration (returning citizens), and the relationship between the community and police. She has presented at the Brown University School of Public Health and has provided commentary for the local PBS station, WHRO. Overall, Dr. Barrett looks to promote professional attitudes among the student body and serve the surrounding community and beyond to make positive changes in the lives of those in need.
