Dr. Amity Nathaniel was born and raised in Philadelphia. She ventured to Jamaica Queens, in New York, where she received her doctorate degree in English literature from St. John’s University. Dr. Nathaniel’s research cannons include Black Feminism, Caribbean Post-Colonialism, 20th Century African American Literature, and Critical Race Theory. Her dissertation, titled “Animal Instinct: Radical Black Feminism and the Virtue of the Demonic” employs Sylvia Wynter’s demonic ground theory to discuss unconventional forms of liberation for Black women. Dr. Nathaniel’s article “#MeToo Mishaps: Black Bodies, Bloody Grounds” was published in the South Central Review.
Although her research specialties are on the literary track, Dr. Nathaniel has been invested in composition studies both inside and outside the academy. She has experience in curriculum development for writing studies, has aided in faculty development institutes about diversifying writing programs, and has used her student-centered approach to re-map how young scholars view themselves as critical thinkers and storytellers for nearly 15 years as a writing tutor and writing instructor.
