Professor Jamean A. Alexander

Professor of Health Education

Biography

Professor Jamean A. Alexander, a Hampton University alumna, has dedicated over twenty years to advancing student wellness and academic achievement as a lifelong advocate for health education. A native of Norfolk, Virginia, she earned her degree in Health Planning and Administration from the University of Cincinnati’s School of Design, Architecture, and Planning.

Alexander began her teaching career at Tidewater Community College’s Portsmouth Campus, where she taught Stress Management and Sexuality Education. She later returned to Hampton University as an adjunct instructor before joining the Department of Sports Science and Wellness as a full-time faculty member. In this capacity, she has supported numerous students and enhanced academic programming in health education, health communication, health literacy, and pathways to public and community health careers.

Alexander maintains active involvement in university service, contributing to the Freddye T. Davy Honors College Faculty, the School of Liberal Arts and Education Homecoming Committee, the Advisory Committee on Libraries and Informational Services, and the Committee on the Bookstore. Within her department, she has served as Co-Coordinator for Health and Physical Education Student Teachers, TrakDat Assessment Team Coordinator, and Health Education Course Coordinator. Additionally, she has advised student organizations, including the Majestic Dance Troupe, Phi Epsilon Kappa, and the Exercise Is Medicine Club.

Her commitment to service extends beyond the university through leadership of the Hampton University Kiddie Kollege Kiddie Kamp Program and participation in health initiatives with Amerigroup Corporation and the United Way of South Hampton Roads.

Professor Alexander is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Health Education and Promotion at Walden University. Her dissertation, “The Experience of Sleep and Academic Performance among African American College Students: A Case Study,” demonstrates her commitment to advancing student wellness through evidence-based research. Through her academic and professional activities, she continues to make substantial contributions to the field of health education.
