Dr. Daishan Johnson

Assistant Professor of Kinesiology

Biography

Dr. Daishan Johnson serves as an Assistant Professor of Kinesiology in the Department of Sports Science and Wellness at Hampton University. He holds a Bachelor of Science from Longwood University, a Master of Science from the University of Florida, and a Ph.D. from Virginia Commonwealth University. His doctoral research developed predictive equations for resting metabolic rate (RMR) in African American women, thereby advancing diversity and representation in exercise science practices.

Dr. Johnson’s research explores the intersection of metabolism, physical performance, and nutrition through evidence-based methodologies in exercise physiology, resistance training, and sport nutrition. His work advances understanding of holistic health outcomes while addressing the underrepresentation of diverse populations within the field of kinesiology.

At Hampton University, Dr. Johnson integrates experiential learning and research-based instruction to prepare students for careers in allied health and human movement. His teaching prioritizes critical thinking, self-discipline, and active participation in laboratory and field environments, while emphasizing the practical application of scientific theory. He is dedicated to cultivating an inclusive and supportive learning environment that enhances analytical reasoning and professional preparedness.

Beyond his teaching and research roles, Dr. Johnson contributes to university governance through service on committees, including the Golden Years Wellness Day Committee, the Pre-Health Committee, and the School of Liberal Arts AI Committee. He also advises Campus Curlz, a student-led organization focused on community development, social engagement, health education, and service learning.

Outside academia, Dr. Johnson is the father of his son, Theo. His dedication to student academic and professional development extends beyond classroom instruction, as he actively mentors’ students in their scholarly pursuits and career planning. His mentorship fosters student confidence, encourages participation in research, and guides students toward meaningful engagement in the broader community.
