Dr. Beverly Duane is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sports Science and Wellness and serves as Director of Dance at Hampton University. She teaches courses in Dance, Health, Pilates Conditioning, and Fitness, integrating movement, wellness, and creative expression to support student learning.
From 2006 to 2025, Dr. Duane served as Advising Director of the Hampton University Terpsichorean Dance Company, providing sustained leadership while advancing the program’s artistic and academic mission. She was the Principal Investigator for the Hampton University Hundred-Year Dance History Project, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. This initiative documented and reconstructed historic works of the Hampton Institute Creative Dance Group and culminated in a featured Black History Month/Black History Matters performance highlighting original choreography by Charles H. Williams.
With her achievements in research and professional practice, Dr. Duane has demonstrated a strong commitment to service within the academic and broader dance communities. Her scholarly and professional contributions have been recognized through a Faculty Research Grant for Dance, Music, and Politics in the 21st Century and a nomination for the Hampton University President’s Ambassador Award. Her service includes leadership roles with the Black College Dance Exchange and the Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, as well as membership in the National Dance Society.
Beyond her academic work, Dr. Duane is the founder of Second Wind Modern Dance Company in Hampton Roads, Virginia. She has choreographed and taught at universities and national programs, including the Virginia Governor’s School for the Arts.
Dr. Duane holds a Master of Arts degree from the State University of New York at Brockport and continues advanced training through Pilates Reformer and Arc/Spine Corrector certification. Building on her established foundation in dance education and wellness, her work demonstrates an ongoing commitment to excellence and innovation. In alignment with these achievements, she aims to further expand the impact of her teaching and research by exploring new methodologies and collaborative opportunities within the field.
