Dr. Jodi Jensen has established a distinguished career in aquatics education and collegiate athletics leadership. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sports Science and Wellness at Hampton University, where she serves as Director of Aquatics and Head Coach of the Women’s Triathlon Team. Director of Aquatics since 2004, she was appointed inaugural head coach of the first HBCU-sponsored women’s triathlon program in the United States in August 2019.
Dr. Jensen holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Recreation and Tourism from Christopher Newport University. She earned a Master of Public Administration from Old Dominion University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Management from Hampton University. She has over 30 years of experience in aquatics education, facility management, and coaching. Her previous roles in public parks and recreation for James City County and the City of Newport News included oversight of both indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities and waterfront operations.
At Hampton University, Dr. Jensen leads comprehensive aquatics programming focused on safety, skill development, and wellness education. She teaches undergraduate courses in swimming, lifeguard training, water safety, First Aid, and CPR. She has instructed swimmers at all levels, from youth and adult learners to competitive triathletes. Her work reflects a sustained commitment to access, confidence-building, and diversity within aquatics.
As head coach, Dr. Jensen led the Women’s Triathlon team to NCAA National Championship qualifications in 2023 and 2024. In 2024, the program and several athletes earned College Triathlon Coaches Association Scholar All-American honors.
Dr. Jensen serves on the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council, where she contributes to developing national standards and best practices for aquatic safety and education. Her leadership ensures that emerging research and evidence-based strategies are integrated into both local programs and broader aquatic communities. These efforts directly support Hampton University’s mission by equipping students with essential life-saving skills, fostering inclusive opportunities for women in sport, and enhancing the overall culture of health and wellness on campus and beyond.
