Dr. W. Timothy Orr

Assistant Professor and Coordinator, Sport Administration Graduate Program

Biography

Since 2018, Dr. W. Timothy Orr has served as Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Sport Administration Graduate Program at Hampton University. In 2022, he played a key role in selecting the Hampton University Sport Management program as one of only three nationwide chosen to participate in the Little League World Series Residency Program, alongside Penn State University and Syracuse University. Dr. Orr earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology from East Carolina University, a Master of Sport Science in Sport Management from the United States Sports Academy, and a Doctor of Education in Sport Management from Northcentral University. His research focuses on intercollegiate athletic administration and student-athlete well-being.

Dr. Orr’s professional background encompasses leadership positions in NCAA Division II athletics, collegiate football coaching at both Division I and Division II levels, and over 15 years of teaching experience in higher education.

In addition to his work in athletics, Dr. Orr recently hosted the podcast “Beyond the Lights,” which offered current and former student-athletes a forum to discuss contemporary issues in sports. He specializes in supporting student-athletes as they transition to new stages of personal and professional development and leads the speaker series “Classroom Chat with Dr. Tim Orr.”

Dr. Orr demonstrates a strong commitment to community engagement and mentorship through active involvement in civic and professional organizations. As Vice President of the Hampton Roads Committee of 200+ Men, Vice Basileus of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and Advisor for the Collegiate 100 at Hampton University, a mentoring organization affiliated with the 100 Black Men of America, he advances leadership development and accessible mentorship for underrepresented youth. In 2023, through Collegiate 100, Dr. Orr implemented a mentorship workshop series that paired Hampton University students with local high school students, resulting in higher college application rates and greater self-reported confidence among participants. His service on the Board of Directors for the Hampton Roads Youth Foundation further extends his impact by supporting mental health initiatives and providing direct mentorship to local high school student-athletes, thereby fostering positive youth development and academic achievement. Additionally, as a member of the Board of Directors for the Y. H. at the Thomas Community Center, Dr. Orr shapes community programming that addresses local needs and promotes a supportive environment for youth and families in the Hampton area.
