Dr. Lia Snead is a native of Queens, New York and holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Georgia Southern University (formerly Armstrong Atlantic State University), a Master of Music from Northern Illinois University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of South Carolina.
Dr. Snead has held teaching and conducting positions across the secondary and collegiate levels, including applied Trumpet at Savannah State University, Director of Bands at Robert W. Groves High School, Associate Director of Bands at Richmond Hill High School, and Director of Bands at Wartburg College following completion of her doctorate. Her ensembles have earned consistent superior ratings, numerous festival awards, and participated in national and international concert tours. She has also performed with the Savannah Wind Symphony, serving on its board of directors and as a frequent guest conductor.
Dr. Snead is currently the Director of Wind Studies at Hampton University and is active as a clinician, adjudicator, guest conductor, and performer. She is a member of the Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA), National Association for Music Education (NAfME), Minority Band Directors National Association (MBDNA), Association of Black Women Band Directors (ABWBD), College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), the National Band Association (NBA), and is a life member of Tau Beta Sigma. She is married to her college sweetheart, fellow musician and Director of Bands at Booker T. Washington High School, Mr. Derrick Snead, and they share a peekapoo puppy named Nina Simone Snead.
