Dr. David W. Hunter

Endowed Professor of Kinesiology

Biography

Dr. David W. Hunter is an Endowed Professor of Kinesiology in the Department of Sports Science and Wellness at Hampton University, where he has contributed more than three decades of service in teaching, research, and academic leadership. Throughout his career, he has played a vital role in advancing both the department and the School of Liberal Arts and Education, including service as Department Chairperson and Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs.

Dr. Hunter earned his bachelor’s degree from Hiram College in Ohio and completed both his master’s and doctoral degrees at The Ohio State University, specializing in Exercise Physiology. His academic preparation and leadership have helped shape rigorous curricula and uphold long-standing academic standards within the department.

His research focuses on human performance and physiological differences among racial groups in relation to athletic ability. His scholarship has appeared in respected professional outlets, including Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, the International Olympic Committee’s World Congress on Sport Sciences, and The Journal of African American Men. His work has also reached national audiences through publications such as Sports Illustrated, Muscle & Fitness, Emerge, The Source Sports, and Runner’s World.

At Hampton University, Dr. Hunter teaches courses in exercise physiology, kinesiology, and motor learning. Through decades of leadership, scholarship, and mentorship, he has helped shape the academic direction of the department and continues to serve as a guiding presence in advancing excellence, inquiry, and student success in the study of human performance.
