James West is a prolific inventor and scientist, best known for co-inventing the electret microphone in the 1960s while working at Bell Labs. This inexpensive and compact microphone is now used in most microphones today, from telephones to hearing aids. He also holds over 250 foreign and U.S. patents for the production and design of microphones and techniques for creating polymer foil electrets.
