Military Students
Hampton University Online supports the higher education goals of men and women who choose to serve our country as members of the U.S. Armed Forces. We understand that service members face special circumstances that can make pursuit of higher education very challenging. Hampton U Online will help our military students meet this challenge with knowledgeable counselors, effective advisement, and extensive resources. If you are a member of the U.S. Armed Forces in pursuit of a degree from Hampton U Online, be sure to refer to our āMilitary Studentsā page as a primary resource while matriculating through your degree program.
Military Credit
Veterans and active duty personnel who have at least two years of honorable service are eligible for academic credit as a result of their military training and experience. In recognition of the contributions made by persons serving in the military and the extensive training in which they have engaged, the Hampton U Online grants the following academic exemptions to veterans:
- A maximum of 2-semester hours of credit in health education is awarded to all veterans and active duty military personnel.
- A maximum of an additional 6-semester hours of credit in social science is awarded to enlisted persons in grades E-1 through E-6. This credit may be used to fulfill the social science requirements, except for HIST 106 and 202.
- Commissioned and Warrant Officers and Non-commissioned Officers in grades E-7 through E-9 are awarded an additional 3 semester hours credit in social sciences plus 3 semester hours in oral communications.

CLEP/DANTES
Hampton University participates in the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) of the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) and the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES). The University accepts for credit both the general examinations and the subject examinations. The subject examinations, however, must be approved by the respective academic department of the university. Awarding of credit for CLEP will be based on recommendations of CEEB. Credit for DANTES will be based on recommendations of the American Council of Education (ACE). A maximum of thirty credits will be accepted. Scores received from CLEP may not satisfy requirements for English 101 and English 102.
Service Members Opportunity Colleges (SOC)
- Students are required to take no more than 30% of their degree requirements with Hampton U Online.
- No final year or final semester residency requirement.
- Transfer credit is maximized for military experience.
- Credit is awarded for nationally-recognized tests, such as College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) General and Subject Examinations and (DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST).
Veterans Benefits/GI Bill
Hampton U Online is authorized to certify students who qualify for Veterans Benefits. If you are eligible for Veterans Benefits, please follow the steps below to apply:

Veterans can also fill out their VA forms on theĀ VONAPP website. First time VA applicants must complete form 22-1990. If you have used your VA benefits at another institution and are transferring to Hampton University or have changed your academic program major within Hampton U Online, you must submit form 22-1995.
Hampton University College of Education and Continuing Studies VAĀ Registration FormĀ must be completed at each session registration and submitted to the Hampton U Online VA Certifying Official. Student is responsible for completing and submitting this form.
Tuition Assistance
As a service member, you may qualify for Tuition Assistance (TA), which currently covers 100% of your tuition up to $250 per credit hour. Tuition-assisted service members must submit an authorized Tuition Assistance Form at the time of registration. Procedures vary among the different branches; therefore, the service member is responsible for immediately reporting any enrollment changes (add, drop, withdrawal, or course cancellation) to the Education Services Office at the appropriate military location.
