The Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications
Founded in 2002, the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications emphasizes excellence and innovation while adhering to the core standards and ethical principles of the industry.
“Give light and the people will find their own way.” This motto, coined by the Scripps Howard Foundation, has been the guiding inspiration of Hampton University’s Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications since its inception in 2002. Uniquely designed as a modern, symbolic lighthouse, the Scripps Howard School was built with a vision to produce ethical and competitive leaders equipped to practice excellence and innovation in multimedia technology while adhering to the core principles of journalism and communications.
The Scripps Howard School is equipped with:
- A professional television studio and control room
- A live, FM radio station (WHOV 88.1 MHz) with digital streaming to the Internet
- Five media labs (including two Mac labs)
- An audiovisual podcast room
- An audio-only podcast room
- High-tech classrooms equipped with state-of-the-art Promethean boards
- Wi-Fi throughout the building
- A stadium-style, media auditorium
Scripps Howard students have full-access to the amenities at the school, as well as the highly skilled and experienced professors. With professional backgrounds varying from The New York Times, The Washington Post, Inside Edition, Atlantic Records, MTV Networks, Cox Communications, CBS and PBS, each professor teaches an intimate class of no more than 15-25 students, allowing each student personalized attention and the opportunity to establish valuable relationships.
Students at the Scripps Howard School are immersed in journalism and communications education and experience in and out of the classroom. Skilled in software programs such as Final Cut Pro, Adobe InDesign and digital radio operation, students gain an in-depth knowledge of professional industry programs. To complement their curriculum, students can join organizations including:
- The National Association of Black Journalists
- The Public Relations Student Society of America – Hampton University
- Brand757, a student-run, for-profit public relations firm comprised of student leaders
- Kappa Tau Alpha (the National Honor Society for Journalism and Communications majors in the top 10% of their class
