The Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications is the result of more than 50 years of mass media-related instruction at Hampton University. Founded in 2002, the Scripps Howard School offers program services to more than 250 students who major in journalism and strategic communication. It emphasizes excellence and innovation in teaching while adhering to the core standards and ethical principles of the industry. The journalism curriculum encompasses the professional values and essential competencies enumerated by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.
Responsibilities
The assistant professor is a full-time faculty member in the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications and will concentrate on teaching classes to meet requirements in the journalism major. The Scripps Howard School desires candidates who can merge theoretic instruction with hands-on opportunities for students that illuminate industry trends and/or show industry needs. Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Teaching classes geared toward the journalism major.
- Teaching a 4/4 load including classes such as Reporting and Newswriting Across Platforms, Social and Multimedia Analytics, and Content Editing.
- Mentoring students in the journalism major.
- Providing writing support for students.
- Participating in school-wide and university-wide committees.
- Participating in the development and assessment of student learning.
- Advising students.
Minimum Qualification/Requirements
Master’s degree or higher in journalism, communications, or related field from an accredited institution of higher learning, preferably from an R1 institution. Three (3) years of professional experience in journalism, content editing, reporting, and newswriting.

The assistant professor is a full-time faculty member in the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications and will concentrate on teaching classes geared toward the strategic communication major. The successful candidate should have professional expertise in communications. The Scripps Howard School especially desires candidates who can merge theoretic instruction with hands-on opportunities for students that illuminate industry trends and/or show industry needs. Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Teaching classes geared toward the strategic communications major.
- Teaching a 4/4 load including classes such as Advanced Media Analytics, Crisis Communications and PR, Campaigns and Media Brand Marketing.
- Mentoring students in the strategic communication major.
- Serving as an advisor for student organizations, including PRSSA and Brand 757, our student-led PR company
- Participating in school-wide and university-wide committees.
- Participating in the development and assessment of student learning.
- Advising students.
Minimum Qualifications / Requirements
Master’s degree or higher in public relations, communications, or related field from an accredited institution of higher learning, preferably from an R1 institution. Three (3) years of professional experience in the communications industry – public relations, marketing, advertising, journalism, or related field.

Duties and Responsibilities
Hampton University’s Scripps Howard School of Journalism & Communications Administrative Assistant supports the administrative and clerical activities of the Office of the Dean. The Administrative Assistant serves as office manager for the Office of the Dean and is responsible for providing intermediate to advance administrative and technical support, as well as the management of the Dean’s calendar, procurement of office supplies, and submission of expense reports and invoices, travel arrangements and other matters assigned by the Dean or Assistant Dean. Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Use principles of good customer service to answer telephone, screen, direct calls, take and relay messages accurately and provide adequate information to callers.
- Schedule appointments, co-ordinate meetings, maintain calendar both manually and electronically.
- Take minutes in monthly faculty meetings
- Serve as first point of contact with students in completing forms
- Perform general office/administrative tasks, including managing budgetary and financial accounting records
- Monitor and maintain office equipment, and supplies and order as needed, control inventory relevant to reception area
- Keep office space and reception area organized and orderly.
- Manage work study students and assign tasks as needed by Dean and Assistant Dean
Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent and three years of clerical/secretarial experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Qualifications

- Excellent communication (fluent in English language) and organization skills.
- Ability to work well either independently or as part of a team.

The Global Public Policy Center is housed within the Scripps Howard School and serves as a hub for journalists and communicators worldwide to collaborate on instructional resources, research and public policy affecting Black Americans locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate should have professional expertise in identifying and conveying Public Policy issues in the U.S. and internationally that impact Black Americans. The Scripps Howard School prefers candidates who are well connected on Capitol Hill and in decision-making communities nationally and globally. They must have a minimum of 3 years working on public policy issues.
Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the Global Public Policy Center in the SHSJC
- Develop a comprehensive strategic plan for the center.
- Develop strategic partnerships for the school with key public policymakers and organizations.
- Lead activities of the Center, including but not limited to, organizing topical news discussions, seminars, conferences, special events, polling announcements, studies on education, health, wealth, voting, incarceration, reparations, political representation, and other battlefront issues that impact Black Americans.
- Maintain digital communications, reports, and records.
Requirements
The ideal candidate must possess at least a master’s degree in communication or equivalent professional experience. The successful candidate will have professional experience in a media and/or communications-related field (public relations, marketing, advertising, journalism, etc.).
