Devika Koppikar (Professor “Koppi”) brings to Hampton University two decades of experience in communications and education. After earning her master’s degree in journalism from American University, she worked as a press secretary to U.S. Congressman Elijah E. Cummings. She then segued into academia, teaching intercultural communications and public speaking in Washington, D.C. metro-area community colleges. 

While teaching, she provided communications services to various companies including the Hip Hop Caucus, Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Wilson Global Communications, Potomac Electric Power Company, National Treasury Employees Union, National Education Association and MedStar Hospital. She’s also written for CNN, Asian Fortune News, and the Houston Chronicle. Most recently, Professor Koppi took an opportunity to teach advanced English and humanities in China.

As an American-born daughter of Indian immigrants, Professor Koppi has had a lifelong calling for building bridges between cultures and advocating racial justice. Professor Koppi rejoices in shaping the growth of students and clients as they master communications and writing skills. At Hampton, she teaches Intro to media writing, media in a multicultural society and grammar and AP style.
