Ebenezer Ako-Adjei was a Ghanaian statesman, politician, lawyer and journalist. He was a member of the United Gold Coast Convention and one of six leaders who were detained during Ghana’s struggle for political independence from Britain, a group famously called The Big Six. Ako-Adjei also played a prominent role in the West African Students Union (WASU) and became its president. It was against this background that we organized the Fifth Pan-African Congress which was held in Manchester in 1945. This conference went on to be regarded as a turning point within the independence struggle and was attended by the likes of W. E. B. Du Bois, Hastings Banda and Jomo Kenyatta.
