Susan La Flesche Picotte

Susan La Flesche Picotte was a groundbreaking physician and social reformer. She was the first Native American woman to earn a medical degree and dedicated her life to providing healthcare to the Omaha tribe. She was also the first person to receive federal aid for professional education. In 1913, two years before her death, she saw her life’s dream fulfilled when she opened a hospital in the reservation town of Walthill, Nebraska. Today the hospital houses a museum dedicated to the work of La Flesche Picotte and the history of the Omaha and Winnebago tribes.
