Students interested in professional education programs are encouraged to begin preparation for the Praxis Core test upon entry to the University. The Education Advising and Assessment Center serves as a great resource to assist students in preparing for the test, which is required for program entry.
Students seeking licensure in the Department of Education must meet all entry, continuation and exit requirements. Students should seek advisors in both the Department of Education and the major area to obtain materials outlining requirements.

Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society
Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society in Education, founded in 1911, was established to foster excellence in education and promote fellowship among those dedicated to teaching. The founders chose the name from the Greek words to represent knowledge, duty, and power. Today, it comprises 582 chapters and more than 45,000 members. Albert Einstein, George Washington Carver, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Margaret Mead are just a few of the historically known members. Current renowned members include Barbara Morgan, Alfie Kohn, Lisa Delpit, Andy Hargreaves, James Banks, and Howard Gardner. To date, more than 1,200,000 educators worldwide have been inducted into this international honor society.
Student Virginia Educators Association (SVEA)
Student Virginia Education Association (SVEA) is a pre-professional organization that will guide students into our challenging world of teaching. Joining SVEA opens doors to students with local associations in every school division in the state of Virginia. Student membership is available to all Hampton University education Majors. Contact the Department of Education (Phenix Hall, Room 304) for more information.
All students are required to complete 90 hours of observation during practicum and one semester of 480 hours of student teaching.
Upon completion of the bachelor’s and master’s degree graduates obtain licensure that meet Virginia State Certification. Our certified graduates can work in the United States and abroad. Students are also notified of study abroad opportunities from the International Education Office and discipline specific teacher recruitment organizations.
Program Accreditation and Disclosure Statement: Hampton University offers the following programs that are fully approved by the State Council of Higher Education and by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
These programs are also fully accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation CAEP).
All programs listed below are housed within the Department of Education in the School of Liberal Arts and Education.

Licensure Disclosure: All Hampton University Department of Education programs meet the requirements for state licensure. Completion of these programs meets licensure or certification requirements for the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), and all states and territories that have an agreement of reciprocity.
Virginia participates in the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC). The NASDTEC Interstate Agreement facilitates the mobility of educators among the states and jurisdictions that are members of NASDTEC and have signed the Agreement. There are eight states which have full reciprocity that allow a teacher licensed in Virginia to become licensed in that state without any further requirements. Those states and territories with full reciprocity for Virginia include Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Mississippi, Missouri, and Wyoming. All other states and jurisdictions that participate in the NASDTEC Interstate Agreement may choose to have additional requirements for out-of-state educators. These additional requirements vary upon the educator’s years of experience, endorsements, or certifications.
The Education Advising and Assessment Center (EAAC) provides assistance to undergraduate and graduate students seeking a license to teach in the State of Virginia or aiming to become certified support personnel in education. Students are provided access to an array of resources to include the latest in test preparation for all required Praxis exams and the National Counselor Exam (NCE). Room 302.
Diagnostic assessments are conducted to assess students’ strengths and areas of improvement, to ensure differentiation of instruction, and to meet the targeted needs of students. The Center is also open to non-education majors who are preparing for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The Center is located in Phenix Hall,
This program provides grants of up to $4,000 a year to students who are completing or plan to complete course work needed to begin a career in teaching.
The 2018 Virginia General Assembly appropriated $708,000 in support of the Virginia Teaching Scholarship Loan Program (VTSLP). Subject to available funding, scholarship amounts will be based on $10,000 per academic year for full-time students and shall be prorated for part-time students based on the number of credit hours.
Subject to available funding, these scholarship loans are for teacher candidates, including graduate students and paraprofessionals from Virginia school divisions enrolled in an approved teacher education program at an accredited Virginia public or private four-year institution of higher education in the Commonwealth. Candidates must (i) be enrolled full-time or part-time in an approved undergraduate or graduate teacher education program or are participants in another approved teacher education program; (ii) have maintained a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.7 on a 4.0 scale or its equivalent; and (iii) be nominated for such scholarship by the institution where they are enrolled and meet the criteria and qualifications, pursuant to § 22.1-290.01, Code of Virginia, except as provided herein.
Awards shall be made to candidates who are enrolled full-time or part-time in an approved undergraduate or graduate teacher education programs for the top five critical teacher shortage disciplines; however, a minority teacher candidates may be enrolled in any content area for teacher preparation. Teacher candidates who previously received funding through the Virginia Teaching Scholarship Loan Program are not eligible.
“Minority student candidate” is defined as Black (includes Jamaican, Bahamians and other Caribbeans of African descent), Hispanic (includes person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Central or South American or other Spanish origin or culture), Asian and Asian American (includes Pakistanis, Indians, and Pacific Islanders), and American Indians (includes Alaskans).

All Education programs are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and have received its highest commendations.
This program is available in-person and provides students with a multidisciplinary curriculum reflecting content areas and professional education coursework with option Leading to Endorsement in Elementary Education (M.T.).
These in-person programs are within the M.T. Five-Year Program, where students first must complete a B.A. or B.S in the content area of their choosing (Biology, Chemistry, English, Math, or Music). Upon completion of 3 introductory education courses and the Praxis II Subject Assessment during their sophomore/junior year, students may apply for admission during their senior year. This online program provides candidates with courses to prepare students as licensed school-based leaders (principal or district) or higher education administrators.
This is an online doctoral program that contains concentrations in PK-12 education, higher education, STEM leadership, and special education administration.
PK–12 Administration (District-level leadership and beyond) — This concentration is focused on the challenges and means for addressing the major issues facing K-12 leaders, such as out- Hampton University 2016-2018 The Graduate College 215 comes assessment, teacher quality, access, finances, technology, school choice, charter movement. It is geared toward education administrators focused on obtaining leadership and practical research skills necessary to effectively lead at the highest organizational levels in K-12.
