Golf Cart and Electric Vehicle Guidelines

Golf carts and E-Scooters are an easy, convenient way of getting to and from classes and/or events on University grounds. However, they pose new risks to the safety of riders and pedestrians. Outlined below are some rules and guidelines for students and faculty when it comes to these methods of transportation.

Guidelines

Per University Policy and Virginia Law, electric scooters and golf carts are classified as vehicles and must abide by all traffic laws including :

  • Operators must ride as close as safely possible to the right curb or edge of the roadway except when:
         1. Overtaking and passing a vehicle in the same direction
         2. When preparing for a left turn
  • Persons operating these vehicles must not exceed a speed of 15 Mph as posted on University speed limit signs.
  • When operating these vehicles riders must obey all traffic signs and signals, including STOP signs, traffic lights, and yielding to pedestrians.

What happens if these guidelines are not followed?

University police are able to stop any person in violation of these guidelines. Any officer who has made a stop for any violation is able to issue a warning or university citation.

How can I protect myself and those around me?

  1. Stop at all stop signs
  2. Adhere to all traffic lights
  3. Yield to pedestrians
  4. Do not exceed the posted university speed limit of 15mph
  5. Use hand signals when turning

We appreciate your cooperation in making sure that our Home by the Sea remains safe for riders and pedestrians.
