Department Majors

The English Major

Students who wish to major in English may choose between four concentrations—Arts, Creative Writing, Film Studies, and Secondary Education—each lending itself to many career options. The Arts concentration is for those who wish to pursue graduate or professional study in the varying fields of English, Law, and Medicine, or for those whose career aspirations are in professional writing (such as Technical Writing), business, library science, theology, government, or non-profit organizations. The Creative Writing concentration is for those interested in writing poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, or magazine writing. The Film Studies concentration is for those interested in writing for film, television, or other media. The Secondary Education concentration is for those who aspire to be middle school or high school English teachers.

The Film Studies Major

The Film Studies major explores the history, theory, criticism and aesthetics of cinema while immersing students in the technical and creative aspects of filmmaking. Students with interests in producing, directing, cinematography, scriptwriting, and post-production will find opportunities for expression and growth while developing broader understandings of the social, cultural, and political dimensions of film and media arts. Film Studies majors will develop excellent intellectual, communicative, writing and research skills, providing the foundation for a wide range of career opportunities as well as for careers directly connected with the study of film, including: film distribution and production, administrative and management positions in the film industry, advertising and public relations in film, and publishing and education in film.
