Federal Direct Stafford Student Loans
All federal student loans are processed through the William D. Ford Federal Direct Lending Program. Below are the federal educational loan options:
Students who are first-time borrowers with the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) will need to complete an electronic Master Promissory Note (E-MPN) and Entrance Counseling at www.studentloans.gov. The Financial Awareness Counseling listed under “Tools and Resources” on www.studentloans.gov is not able to be substituted as the required Direct Loan Entrance Counseling.
All federal student loan borrowers will receive a confirmation email from the DOE once they have successfully completed the E-MPN. Students can check HUNet at least 2 business days after completing the Entrance Counseling to check the status.
As of March 29, 2015, if a borrower has been approved for a Direct Parent PLUS or Direct Graduate PLUS loan by means of obtaining a qualified endorser or documenting to the satisfaction of the DOE that there are extenuating circumstances related to the borrower’s adverse credit, the borrower must complete the new Direct PLUS Loan Counseling requirement at www.studentloans.gov.
International students who need assistance in financing their education have the option to apply for private educational loans through a private loan lender. Most private loan lenders require an international loan applicant to also have a U.S. co-signer during the application process. International students can review a listing of lenders by clicking this link.
