Phase 1
Pete the Pirate has the capacity to answer questions related to Financial Aid and Student Business Services. Pete the Pirate will best answer your inquiries, direct you to resources, or assist you in reaching his human colleagues through email or by helping you book an appointment.
Here are some quick notes to help you fully engage with Pete the Pirate.
- Before you can text Pete the Pirate, make sure you have selected Opt In for Official HU Text Communications in your Text Message Notification Preferences, data rates may apply. You can always Opt Out at any time by adjusting your preferences.
- When you call, Pete the Pirate will let you know that the phone call is being recorded. Pete the Pirate records phone calls to support continuous training and documentation for continuity of support and ensuring Hampton University’s standard of excellence. If you need help from a staff member, Armstrong will share your conversation so that the Staff member can assist you.

Pete the Pirate is here to help -but knows when to step aside. While Pete the Pirate can resolve many of your questions on the spot, Hampton University recognizes some matters call for a real person. Pete the Pirate is built to recognize those moments in conversation and will connect you directly with a human staff member.
Messages that Pete the Pirate sends are reviewed during the University’s business hours. Please allow 24-48 hours for a response. If you would like to speak with a staff member you can say, “I would like to speak with someone in Financial Aid/Student Business Services”. Pete the Pirate will send your question directly to someone who will respond with further assistance.
Pete the Pirate will assist you in making an in-person or virtual meeting with staff from Financial Aid and Scholarships and Student Business Services offices. If you would like to make an appointment you can say, “I would like to make an appointment with someone in Financial Aid/Student Business Services. Pete the Pirate will consult with our connected booking page and book an appointment with a staff member best suited to address your concerns.

Yes, past conversations are stored to build on knowledge to provide you with complete support.
What is Phase 1?
Phase 1 is the initial implementation of Pete the Pirate to the campus community. We recognize that support in the Financial Aid and Student Business Services was our biggest need for our students. Concentrating on these specific areas was a priority.
The plan is to add other resources and departments to create a more comprehensive resource for the University community. We strive to make a better experience for our students and look forward to implementing more phases and grow Pete the Pirate to encompass every aspect in Our Home by the Sea.
Is my information being shared?
Pete the Pirate has access to general information such as your name, phone number, email, and general student information (financial aid and student business services information). Past conversations are recorded for continuity, but access is restricted to information beyond that.
Is talking to Pete the Pirate safe and private?
Your conversations and information with Pete the Pirate are handled securely and privately. Staff members can review conversations to provide system improvements and provide further assistance when a staff member’s assistance is requested to address your concerns. These conversations constitute education records protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
