The Hampton University Jazz Performance Institute (HUJPI) is designed to provide music students with an opportunity to collaborate with other like-minded young musicians from their communities and across the United States at one of the finest historically black colleges and universities in the world.
Featured Artists
- Derrick Gardner: Director of Jazz Studies at Northwestern University and Hampton University alum.
- Vincent Gardner: Jazz at Lincoln Center Trombonist and Artistic and Education Director/Co-Founder of Jazz Houston.
Event Highlights
- High School Jazz Band Competition: Featuring six high school jazz bands selected on a “first-come-first-come” basis. Bands will be judged by Derrick and Vincent Gardner with ratings of “Superior” or “Excellent.” Each band will receive a participation trophy.
- Workshops: Covering improvisation, instrumental/vocal technique, and music business, led by the Gardner Brothers and other esteemed musicians.
- Performances: The Gardner Brothers will perform a 45-minute set for high school students on the first and second day of the event. The event will culminate in a full jazz concert by the Gardner Brothers in the prestigious Ogden Hall.
