Dr. Curtis Perry Otto

Assistant Professor

C. Perry Otto is in his 28th season as the scenic and light designer with the Hampton Players. He received his PhD in Communication Studies with an empahsis in Rhetoric in 2009, and his Master of Fine Arts in Scene Design in 1988. He has presented papers on the rhetorical aspects of topics including cinema, sports, and political cartooning in conferences across the country. His paper “Rhetoric, Science, and Global Warming” was selected as a Top Paper at the 2009 Southern States Communication Association conference. Other conference presentations include “HBCU Perspectives on Theatre,” to the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

In addition to Oral Communication and Senior Thesis, he currently teaches courses in theatrical design, production, and theory in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. His award-winning theatre work includes involvement as designer, technical director, or stage director for over one hundred productions including: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Little Shop of Horrors, Stick Fly, Romeo & Juliet, Ruined, Doubt, The Lion in Winter, A Love To Call My Own, Dearly Departed, The Bluest Eye, A Love To Call My Own, Blues for an Alabama Sky, A Raisin in the Sun, Macbeth, Smokey Joe’s Café, Grease, A Streetcar Named Desire, West Side Story, The Wiz, What Use Are Flowers?, Shakin’ The Mess Outta Misery, The Disappearance, Sasha and the Magic Cookie Maker, Tartuffe, Mama Dee’s Girls, Shakuntala, Dracula, Black Pearls, The Amen Corner, Steal Away, The Piano Lesson, The Emperor Jones, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, 40 Acres and A Mule (World Premiere), Once On This Island, One Mo’ Time, Stickfly, Home, and Equus.
