Hampton University Celebrates Alumnus Lt. Gen. Xavier T. Brunson on Historic Confirmation for Promotion to Four-Star General

Distinguished Leader to Command U.S. Forces Korea

Hampton University celebrates the historic nomination for promotion of Lt. General Xavier T. Brunson to the rank of four-star General in the United States Army. A proven military leader and strategist, Brunson’s nomination positions him for the role of commander of U.S. Forces Korea (USFK), succeeding General Paul LaCamera. Upon confirmation, Lt. General Brunson would lead approximately 28,500 U.S. troops stationed in South Korea, overseeing key commands including the United Nations Command and the Combined Forces Command. His mission will focus on deterring North Korean aggression and ensuring stability in the region.

“Hampton University is incredibly proud of General Brunson’s achievement,” said Hampton University President Lt. Gen. Darrell K. Williams (USA, Retired). “His remarkable leadership and commitment to our nation exemplify the values of excellence, service, and integrity we instill in every Hamptonian. His journey from our campus to being considered amongst one of the highest military ranks in the U.S. Army is a testament to the transformative power of a Hampton education.”

This successful nomination would place him among a distinguished group of African American military leaders who have ascended to the highest levels of command in the U.S. Armed Forces.

General Brunson graduated from Hampton University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as an Infantry Officer in the U.S. Army, launching a decorated career that includes command roles across both Conventional and Special Operations Forces. He has served in major operations such as Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and Inherent Resolve.

In addition to his undergraduate degree from Hampton, General Brunson holds a Master of Arts in Human Resource Development from Webster University and a Master of Science in National Security Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. His distinguished service has earned him numerous accolades, including recognition from the U.S. Army Regimental Associations and civic awards like Omega Psi Phi’s leadership award.

“General Brunson’s nomination is a beacon of inspiration for our students and alumni,” President Williams added. “It reminds us that the path to greatness is paved not only with ambition but also with a commitment to service. His leadership has touched countless lives, and his career trajectory is a testament to his unwavering dedication to our nation’s security.”
