February 24, 2025 (Hampton, Va.) Today, Hampton University and many other colleges and universities around the world will be honoring International Study Abroad Day. Founded in 2020 by Erin Kunert and Jessica Mulvihil, this day was originally recognized as National Study Abroad Day and was changed to highlight the global impact that international travel has on college students.
The Hampton University International Office strives to advance Hampton’s mission of providing the #1 Student Experience in America on a global scale. By partnering with many study-abroad programs such as Operations Crossroads Africa, World Endeavors, and Florence university of Arts: Italy, Hampton helps to further the cause of promoting global citizenry and cultural collaboration among domestic and international students and scholars.

One of the many Hampton University students who have had the privilege of experiencing the opportunity to study abroad is Danyel White, a second-year Psychology major from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
When discussing her time spent abroad in Thailand, White described her experience as “nothing but pleasant.”
“I met so many amazing people from around the world and I was able to experience so much in such a small amount of time,” said White.
“One of my biggest takeaways from the experience would be that the world is so much bigger than we think it is, there are so many people living in so many ways and it’s all beautiful. I’ll remember my time in Thailand fondly for the rest of my life!”
On this International Study Abroad Day, it’s important to acknowledge the impact that studying abroad has on students across the world, but especially on students at Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs).
According to insidehighered.com, only about 3.4% of HBCU students study abroad during their undergraduate years in comparison to the 10.4% at other institutions. These disproportionate rates only emphasize the need for increased funding for these sorts of opportunities at minority-serving institutions.
“Hampton University’s International Office hosts Study Abroad Fairs and other important events and programs to promote global travel and social responsibility,” said Samria Haysbert, assistant director of the International Office.
“At Hampton University, we believe global experiences are essential for academic and personal growth. International Study Abroad Day is an opportunity to highlight how international education broadens perspectives, enhances career opportunities, and prepares our students to be global leaders.”
On February 20, the International Office held a Study Abroad Fair with global partners, students, and faculty and staff. Students interested in studying abroad should head to the International Office website here for more information.
