Hampton, Va. (November 22, 2024) – The Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute (Hampton Proton) proudly announces the appointment of Scott Berry, as executive director. With a distinguished 30-year career in radiation oncology, including 24 years in progressive leadership roles, Berry brings a wealth of experience to advance the center’s mission of providing innovative and compassionate cancer treatment.

“Hampton is seeing astounding growth across our campus and among our partner institutions,” said Hampton University President Darrell K. Williams. “We’re excited to have Scott Berry as part of the Hampton team. His understanding of leadership, science, and healthcare will help to advance the trajectory of the Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute.”

Berry joins Hampton Proton after having served as the system director for Neurosciences and Pulmonary Service Lines at Summa Health in Akron, Ohio. Prior to this role, he was the senior director of operation at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in Pittsburgh, where he oversaw operations across 27 facilities and drove advancements in technology, patient safety and quality assurance.

“We are thrilled to welcome Scott Berry to the Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute,” said Charles Cansler, Hampton Proton’s interim executive director and Hampton University senior vice president of business operations and finance. “His remarkable expertise, along with a deep passion for improving patient care, will advance the facility’s mission and solidify its standing as a leader in proton therapy.”

A Pittsburgh native, Berry began his career as a radiation therapist and quickly rose to leadership roles, driven by his proven success in growth strategies and project implementation. His accomplishments include introducing innovative treatment technologies and services, such as Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT), to his region. Additionally, he has led initiatives to expand access to care, including developing research programs and collaborating with oncology organizations to offer clinical trials.

During his time as division director of oncology at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Berry led the design and development of a $17 million cancer center, successfully integrated PET/CT and Low-Dose CT programs, and managed accreditation processes to improve availability to comprehensive cancer care.

“Scott’s proven track record in advancing radiation oncology services is an ideal fit for Hampton Proton,” said Dr. Christopher Sinesi, medical director at Hampton Proton. “His leadership will enhance our ability to deliver innovative treatment and provide a world-class experience for every patient.”

A Leadership Vision Focused on Advancing Research, Advocacy, and Access

Berry’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for Hampton Proton as the center enters its 15th year of providing proton therapy to the region.

“I am thrilled to be a part of the team and looking forward to continuing all the great work here at the proton center and advancing the program to the next level,” said Berry.

Berry’s leadership role officially began on November 20, following his introduction to the Hampton Proton staff during the organization’s quarterly townhall meeting. During the meeting, he shared his vision for advancing patient care and operational excellence.

“I’m very excited to be part of this team,” Berry shared during the meeting. “My role is centered on advancing the initiatives established by current leadership and developing a thorough strategy for the next three to five years. This strategy, which I will focus on consistently, will be guided by Quint Studer’s Five Pillars of Excellence: Service, Quality, People, Finance, and Growth.”

Berry holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Western Governors University, Utah. He also earned an associate degree in Radiation Therapy from Community College of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh. Additionally, he is CompTIA Project+ Certified, which underscores his expertise in managing complex projects. Berry is a registered member of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiation Therapy and holds affiliations with professional organizations, including the American College of Cancer Care (ACCC) and the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT).

With several years of experience in oncology leadership, including a strong background in leading accreditation processes, project management and strategic planning, Berry is well-positioned to lead Hampton Proton into its next phase of research, advocacy and equitable access to state-of-the-art cancer care.
