Campus Ethics Bowl Team Wins Two Rounds at Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges’ 25th Annual Applied Ethics Bowl

HAMPTON, VA – Hampton University’s Ethics Bowl team demonstrated their analytical prowess and critical thinking skills at the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges’ (VFIC) 25th Annual Applied Ethics Bowl, presented by TowneBank, on February 7.

Competing against top independent colleges and universities across the state, Hampton University secured victories in two rounds during the prestigious event held at the University of Richmond. This year’s competition centered on the theme “Ethics and Artificial Intelligence,” challenging students to engage in thought-provoking discussions on AI-related ethical dilemmas.

Hampton University continues to lead the way in AI research and thought leadership, particularly in addressing cultural and ethical concerns in artificial intelligence. The university is actively engaged in examining how AI impacts communities of color and advocating for equitable technology policies. Scripps Howard School of Journalism & Communications Dean Julia Wilson has been at the forefront of this conversation, recently drafting an article for the University of Southern California on the culturally ethical use of AI. Her work highlights the importance of ensuring that AI development and implementation do not perpetuate biases against African American communities but instead serve as tools for empowerment and social justice.

Technology like AI affects all levels of our society, influencing everything from access to resources to participation in democracy. A racially inclusive democracy requires that AI be developed and deployed in ways that do not reinforce systemic inequalities but instead help bridge gaps in opportunity and representation. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) play a critical role in this effort, leveraging their expertise and advocacy to shape policies and innovations that create equitable and inclusive technological advancements. By fostering diverse voices in AI research and ethical discussions, HBCUs like Hampton University are helping to ensure that technology serves all communities fairly and justly.

The Hampton University team—comprising sophomores Kania Coman, Miles Cross, Nehemiah Thompson, Ethan Williams, and Jadyn Wilson—showcased exceptional debate skills and ethical reasoning throughout the event.

“The Ethics Bowl was an incredible opportunity for our students to apply their knowledge and analytical skills to real-world ethical challenges,” said Assistant Professor and Pre-Law Institute Director Dr. Damien Bevelle, Esq., faculty advisor for the Hampton University team. “Winning two rounds against strong competition is a testament to their dedication and intellectual abilities.”

The VFIC Applied Ethics Bowl is a highly regarded event that brings together students from Virginia’s leading independent colleges to debate and deliberate complex ethical issues. This year’s milestone 25th anniversary event also honored past VFIC Board Chairs who have served since the inception of the competition in 2000.

“Our Ethics Bowl team exemplifies the excellence, integrity, and intellectual rigor that define Hampton University,” said University President Darrell K. Williams. “Their success in this competition reflects not only their hard work but also our commitment to developing ethical leaders who will positively impact society.”
