Homecoming festivities drives visitor spending, job creation, more

HAMPTON, VA – With over 90 years of Homecoming excellence (Hampton University has officially celebrated homecoming as far back as 1928,) the annual Homecoming celebration at Hampton University is more than just a time for alumni reunions and student festivities—it’s a major economic driver for the Coastal Virginia region. The U.S. economy depends on the contributions of HBCUs. These institutions of higher education continue to drive growth, innovation, jobs, and more while overcoming decades of systemic racism and gross underfunding.
According to recent estimates, Hampton University’s Homecoming events generate millions of dollars in revenue for local businesses and contribute significantly to the economic vitality of the community.
A Boost to the Local Economy
Homecoming draws thousands of alumni, families, and visitors to the City of Hampton, with an estimated attendance of over 18,000 people at last year’s festivities. This year’s projections indicate a similar, if not larger, impact. The influx of visitors during Homecoming results in increased spending at local hotels, restaurants, retail shops, transportation services, and entertainment venues.
Hampton University, with a legacy spanning more than 155 years, continues to be a key economic engine, contributing an impressive $530 million in economic impact to the Coastal Virginia community. New preliminary findings reveal that the HBCU’s influence extends far beyond the classroom, transforming the local economy and supporting thousands of jobs in the region.
According to a recent UNCF report, Hampton University ranks as the number one HBCU in economic impact in the Commonwealth of Virginia, while standing among the top historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the nation for economic contributions. This significant impact is fueled by Hampton’s operational spending, wages, and institutional purchases, which support local businesses and stimulate the regional economy. Additionally, the indirect effects—from student spending to the influx of visitors to campus—create a ripple effect that generates millions more in sustained economic activity.
Tourism and Community Engagement
The influx of visitors to the Hampton Roads area during Homecoming extends beyond the campus. Many guests take the opportunity to explore local attractions such as the Virginia Air and Space Science Center, Fort Monroe, the Peninsula Town Center, and the Downtown Hampton district. This added tourism further boosts the region’s visibility and contributes to its reputation as a cultural hub.
In addition to its economic impact, Hampton University’s Homecoming strengthens the bonds between the University and the surrounding community. The events, which include the highly anticipated football game, cultural performances, and the Homecoming parade, create a sense of pride and celebration that benefits both residents and visitors.
Based on data from Arrivalist, Virginia is the number one origin market of visitors from Homecoming with over 7,500 trips to the destination, with 50 percent of visitors making Homecoming an overnight stay, and more than 30 percent of visitors opting for a daytrip.
According to the same data source, the top ten origin markets for Homecoming visitors by volume are:
- Virginia
- Maryland
- North Carolina
- Ohio
- South Carolina
- Texas
- Rhode Island
- New Jersey
- Oklahoma
- Florida
