B.S. in Airport administration

We offer a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management and Airport Administration for students who aim to run an airport or manage flight operations. Students develop a background in avionics technology, weather, the national airspace system, and airport operations to then learn the principles that allow airports and airlines to run safely and efficiently, studying everything from hiring employees to meeting government security regulations. Our program prepares them for various aviation positions, such as airport managers or government aviation liaisons.

Many of our Aviation Management graduates have gone on to have successful careers with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Richmond International Airport, Republic Airways, Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport, Portland International Airport, and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA), and Norfolk International Airport. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary for airport operations specialists as of 2023 is $54,140.

Mission & Goals

The Aviation Management program equips students with a comprehensive understanding of airport management responsibilities and procedures. The program will promote a solid understanding of operational, economic, and legal influences on airport operations. Additionally, the program will simulate excellence and self-improvement, maintain uniform educational quality with industry standards, and increase the credibility, integrity, and acceptance of collegiate aviation programs among industry, government, and the public.Β Students will demonstrate leadership capabilities and high moral values. The Hampton University Aviation program is and will remain accredited by the Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI).

Students in the Aviation Management major will:Β 

1) Have a strong liberal arts background;Β 

2) Be able to effectively communicate through written and oral methods;Β 

3) Understand the operational, economic, political, legal, and community influences on airport operations;

4) Have established a culture and appreciation of aviation safety, including human factors and CRM;Β 

5) Know how the aviation industry and the governing agencies are organized so graduates can navigate their careers;

AAAE ASOS Basic Course

The American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) and Airport Safety and Operations Schools (ASOS) aim to increase knowledge and understanding of the airport and military personnel who, on a day-to-day basis, play a role in ensuring your airport operates safely and meets Part 139 requirements.

The Aviation Management program incorporated this training into the Senior Capstone course to provide all Airport Administration students a certificate in addition to their degree.

Some of the benefits of the Basic ASOS training include but are not limited to:

  • Become familiar with the latest Advisory Circulars as it relates to Airport Operations
  • Learn 14 CFR Part 139 subject matter from industry experts
  • Network with Airport Operators and industry professionals from around the country
