FAA Medical Certificates
Classes of Medical Certificates:
There are three classes of medical certificates.
1.) First-Class certificates are required for pilots exercising privileges of an airline transport pilot certificate.
2.) Second-class medical certificates are needed for performing other commercial operations.
3.) Third-class medical certificates are adequate for private pilot privileges.
How to Obtain a Medical Certificate:
1.) Go to the FAA MedXpress website and sign up if you do not already have an account.
2.) Begin your medical certificate application.
3.) To find an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) in your area go to https://www.faa.gov/pilots/amelocator.
4.) Schedule an appointment with the examiner.
*Aviation Medical Examiners can be very busy so be sure to book your appointment way ahead of time.
If you have questions regarding the FAA Medical Certification, refer to the FAAβs FAQ on the subject.
Students pursuing the Flight Education degree must pass a medical examination administered by a Federal Aviation Administration designated Medical Examiner prior to flying. A third-class medical certificate is required for private pilot training. However, we encourage students to obtain the first-class certificate to ensure they meet the requirements to be an airline transport pilot.
Students pursuing the Aviation Management degree with the Air Traffic Control concentration are not required to obtain a second-class certificate to enter the program. However, we highly encourage all ATC students to obtain a second class certificate prior to classes to determine if they meet FAA hiring requirements.
flight training requirements
TSA Approval
Rick Aviation and Hampton Universityβs Department of Aviation are required by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to verify the citizenship of all students prior to conducting any flight training in certain flight courses (AVN 163, AVN 267, AVN 363, and AVN 456). Students whom are United States citizens must show proof of citizenship consisting of a valid, unexpired U.S. Passport or an original, certified birth certificate combined with a government-issued photo ID. These documents are to accompany them to HU. This process is completed by flight instruction personnel at the airport only.
Students who are not United States citizens have additional TSA requirements, and will need to start the TSA approval process before the semester begins.
A full list of acceptable forms of identification is available online. For more information on TSA procedures and approval, you can contact Rick Aviation.
Student Pilot Certificate
Students enrolling in AVN 163 without a Private Pilot license must apply for a Student Pilot certificate. It can be acquired online via the FAA’s Integrated Airman Certification and Rating Application (IACRA). This does not need to be completed prior to your arrival on campus as Rick Aviation instructors will ensure this is completed prior to solo!
