Hampton University Department of Aviation Safety Policy

The Hampton University team is committed to providing safe, healthy and secure work conditions with the objective of having an accident‐free workplace. We are accountable to nurture a culture of trust, a learning and sharing culture that openly shares continuous improvement opportunities and identifies all hazards to persons and property. Throughout the organization we will apply the material and human resources necessary to achieve this objective.

The Aviation Department is committed to employing a safety management system (SMS) philosophy that is supported by the four components of safety policy, safety risk management, safety assurance and safety promotion. A vibrant SMS will be used to reduce aviation risk level to as low as reasonably practical and to continuously improve aviation safety, while adhering to the highest professional and ethical standards. High performance is the expected norm within our high reliability organization, noncompliance with standards will generate a collaborative professional development opportunity.

Within the SMS are these key elements:
  • Robust safety policy built on a culture of trust.
  • Leadership commitment to safety accountability.
  • Designation of key safety personnel.
  • Emergency preparedness and response.
  • Hazard identification and analysis of risk exposure.
  • Risk assessment and implementation of risk controls to place risk at lowest practicable level.
  • Notification of hazards to interfacing persons.
  • Safety performance monitoring and measurement.
  • Safety performance assessment.
  • Continuous improvement.
  • Competencies and training.
  • Safety communications.
  • SMS documentation
  • SMS records.

All Leaders, Faculty, Staff and Students are accountable to actively promote the SMS in all endeavors. Hampton University’s goal is the development of industry recognized best practice policies, standardized operating procedures and training. This safety policy will be reviewed annually to ensure that it remains relevant to the University aviation program’s education mission.
