Advising Philosophy
At Hampton University’s Department of Architecture, we believe advising is an essential partnership between student and faculty. Our goal is to support each student’s academic success, professional preparation, and holistic well-being as they progress through the five-year professional program. Advisors serve as mentors — helping you plan your schedule, track your progress, anticipate studio and technical demands, and prepare for licensure and career opportunities. We encourage every student to meet regularly with their advisor and take responsibility for their academic and professional development.
What Advising Offers
Course planning — selecting appropriate studios, technical and general-education courses, and electives in sequence.
Curriculum tracking — ensuring prerequisites and sequences are followed for timely degree completion.
Academic support — early identification of academic difficulties, referrals to tutoring or the Student Success Center, and advice on remediation or repeated courses.
Professional guidance — career advising, portfolio planning, licensure and certification information (e.g. pathway toward ARE/NCARB), internship/co-op planning, and graduate school advising.
Personal support — when personal concerns, life events, or non-academic issues arise, advisors can help connect you to campus resources or support services.
Responsibilities: Student & Advisor
Advisor: Provide accurate information about curriculum and degree requirements; offer timely guidance; alert students to potential issues; refer to support services; help with degree planning.

Advising Schedule & Milestones
Every semester before registration: mandatory advising check-in to confirm next term’s courses.
Studio milestones: portfolio check prior to major studios; preparation for fifth-year studio or graduation.
