American Institute of Architecture Students and National Organization of Minority Architects Students

American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) and National Organization of Minority Architects Students (NOMAS) are the Department’s chapters of national student organizations allied with the American Institute of Architects and the National Organization of Minority Architects. In our small program, the chapters are run as a single organizations. Student membership fees to the national organization are paid from the pool of professional fees, so each student in the program can participate.

Officers of AIAS/NOMAS organize a number of activities throughout each academic year to educate, to build bonds among architecture students, to entertain, and to perform service learning events. These in recent years have included Freshman Week, a Halloween Haunted House, tours of area professionals’ offices, and Architecture Barbie/Young Men in Architecture. The latter, which seeks to help area school children imagine a life in architecture, has earned the organization Community Service Award from the national AIAS organization.

Students also, under the aegis of AIAS/NOMAS regularly travel to state and national conventions of their parent organizations.
