Post-doctoral/Research Assistant Professor Opportunity

The Hampton University Department of Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences invites nominations and applications for a fulltime research position in the Hampton University Lidar Laboratory at the rank of Research Assistant Professor beginning on or before March 1, 2023.

We have an immediate opportunity to conduct research and develop lidar remote sensing technology for trace gases (O3, NO2, Water vapor) and aerosols. Interdisciplinary research by the Hampton University Lidar Laboratory revolves around understanding atmospheric chemistry and physics in the troposphere with laser remote sensing technology. The impact of the meteorology on air quality, wind energy, and calibration and validation of satellite and numerical weather prediction models is examined with the use of active (lidar, radiosondes, and radar) and passive (sun photometer, spectrometer and satellite) remote sensing techniques, and surface in-situ measurements of gases and aerosols.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton.  It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution.  The Department of Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences offers Master of Science and Ph.D. in Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting research and technical activities related to ongoing projects sponsored by NASA, NOAA, DoD and the US EPA to study the distribution of trace gases and particle pollution (aerosol, smoke, dust, etc.) in the troposphere. Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Experience with associated technology used in Raman, Differential Absorption Lidar remote sensing.
  2. Lidar remote sensing retrievals.
  3. Experience with characterization of planetary boundary layer processes, including its height determination with multiple instruments (sondes, lidar/ceilometer, atmospheric sounder spectrometer, satellite) and retrievals (Covariance Wavelet Transform/Haar function, cluster analysis, Edge detection, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning).
  4. Validation of satellite and weather forecasting products from active and passive remote sensors.

Qualifications

Doctoral Degree in any STEM field but preferably in one of the following: Atmospheric Science, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or Meteorology.

Desired skills:

  1. Experience with Optical Parametric Oscillator technology.
  2. Deliver new and creative solutions to complex problems
  1. Elevated level of integrity, ability to deal with ambiguity, takes initiative and is proactive
  2. Evidence of strong character with integrity, honesty, accountability, and trust
  3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to interpret and share content
  4. Experience with programming languages such as Python, and use of Matlab/Simulink
  5. Demonstrated signal processing algorithm development.
