Chairman's Message

Welcome to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Hampton University.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry operates in a supportive and tight-knit community of faculty and staff whose main goal is to educate, mentor, and empower the next generation of chemists, biochemists, and allied professionals with the skills they will need to meet current and future challenges and opportunities.

We offer BS degrees certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS) in Chemistry, Biochemistry, and chemistry with Forensic concentration as well as a minor in chemistry. We also offer programs leading to MS degrees in Analytical, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry. Students pursuing chemistry and chemistry with forensic concentration majors also have the option of obtaining a Master of Teaching (MT) in chemistry with a specialization in secondary (high school) teaching.

Our diverse and experienced faculty are engaged in collaborative research efforts in biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, material science, bioinformatics, nanotechnology, computation and modelling, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, and forensic chemistry. Beyond the classroom students will have the opportunity to participate in undergraduate research experience as early as the first year by working in a faculty-mentored research and through summer internships.

Through a rigorous student-centered scientific education and innovative research, the chemistry majors will attain a solid foundation in the understanding of theoretical chemical principles and laboratory skills necessary for successful admission to various graduate schools, professional programs such as medical and dental schools, etc. Students who graduated from our programs have gone on to medical school, pharmacy school, and multidisciplinary masters and doctorate programs, etc.
