Outreach Programs

The Department of Chemical Engineering at Hampton University is deeply committed to community engagement and inclusive excellence through a robust Outreach Program that connects engineering education with societal needs. The program integrates service learning, STEM pipeline development, and community partnerships to inspire the next generation of engineers. Faculty and students work together to design and deliver interactive workshops, laboratory demonstrations, and mentorship initiatives that introduce K–12 and community college students to chemical engineering principles, sustainability, and hands-on problem-solving. These activities are often held in collaboration with local schools, the NSBE student chapter, and regional STEM councils to promote diversity and equity in engineering disciplines.

Beyond early education outreach, the program also focuses on applied community impact projects, such as water quality testing, hazardous waste awareness, and renewable energy demonstrations across Hampton Roads. By integrating ABET-aligned experiential learning and real-world sustainability challenges, the department ensures that outreach is not only educational but also transformative. Students gain professional growth through leadership and communication experience, while communities benefit from accessible, science-based solutions. Together, these efforts advance Hampton University’s mission of fostering ethical leadership, innovation, and service in underrepresented communities through engineering education and practice.
