About the Department of Counseling

The Hampton University Department of Counseling is a nationally accredited program through the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Programs (CACREP). Since its launch in 1982, the Department of Counseling has prepared counselors to address social justice issues and societal needs by staying cutting and edge and innovative, including the addition of a online doctoral program in Counselor Education and Supervision.  The Department seeks to create professional counselors who are leaders and advocates, and change agents within their communities and school settings at local, national, and international levels. The Master’s-level concentrations offered by the Department are: School Counseling, Student Affairs/College Student Development, Community Mental Health Counseling, Addictions Counseling, and Pastoral Counseling. In addition, the School offers an Education Specialist degree and a doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision. In 2010, the program was awarded a local chapter of Chi Sigma Iota which is the International counseling Honor Society.

Department Accomplishments

The HU Counseling Department has steadily grown in reputation and stature.  In 2014, the Department was awarded a $986,000 grant over three years from the Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, to increase the number of professional mental health counselors.  The National Board of Certified Counselors in 2013 acknowledged the Department as an Approved Continuing Education Provider. The Department is also regarded as a center of excellence within the University. Its faculty currently provides evaluation services for two National Science Foundation grants, one Health Resources Services Administration grant, and one Department of Education grant, all of which are led by other units at Hampton.

In 2019 Virginia Association for Counselor Education and Supervision Counseling Graduate Student Conference was held at Hampton University. This conference was hosted by the Department of Counseling.

The counseling program is deeply involved in the community to provide services that address issues faced by individuals impacting their wellness, academic and career success, and quality of life to those less fortunate. The program is continuously involved with the Community Free Clinic of Newport News to develop integrated care models. The program continues to sponsor trips for students to attend the Virginia Board of Counseling meetings to ensure students have a foundation for advocacy.
