Symposium Workshops
Have you ever wondered how scientists know what the ocean floor looks like without seeing it? In this workshop, you’ll “rise over run” as you use slope to uncover the hidden landscape beneath the waves! Through a hands-on activity, you’ll collect depth measurements and turn them into a 3D map—just like oceanographers do. By the end, you’ll see how a simple math concept helps scientists dive deep into ocean exploration!
Ready to take your ocean mapping skills to the next level? In this workshop, you’ll “rise over run” as you use slope to explore the hidden world beneath the waves—but this time, with the power of data! You’ll collect depth measurements, analyze them in Excel, and create visualizations in GeoGebra to bring the ocean floor to life. Just like real oceanographers, you’ll see how math and technology work together to uncover the mysteries of the deep!
Ever feel lost when trying to find reliable information? In this workshop, you’ll learn how to navigate your library like a pro! You’ll explore the library catalog, discover the best databases for your research, and learn how to use them effectively. Plus, you’ll find out how to access research guides in the sciences, request books through interlibrary loan, and even use library resources from off-campus. With these skills, you’ll be ready to tackle any research project with confidence!
Discover how scientists use RStudio to make sense of ecological data. In this interactive workshop, you’ll learn the basics of RStudio, including how to load a dataset, calculate summary statistics, and visualize ecological relationships with simple plots. No prior coding experience needed—just curiosity and a laptop!
Note: This workshop requires access to a laptop.
