Communicative Sciences and Disorders - Department Overview

The Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders is housed in the School of Science along with programs in biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, marine and environmental science, physical therapy, and physics. The Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders and Physical Therapy are a part of the Division of Health Sciences in the School of Science. The graduate program also falls under the auspices of the Graduate College.

With small class sizes and dedicated faculty, the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders is committed to educating traditional and nontraditional students. The graduate program is a research-based professional program that prepares students for practice in Speech-Language Pathology. The undergraduate program is a pre-professional program that prepares students for graduate study.

The objectives of the curricula are:

  • To disseminate existing knowledge of speech, language, swallowing, and hearing disorders using a multi-disciplinary approach.
  • To provide clinical experience using evidence-based practices for prevention, recognition, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders.
  • To prepare students to meet the minimum requirements for subsequent professional certification by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association.

  • To maintain quality programs that are enhanced through rigorous and scheduled review.
  • To promote excellence in teaching in courses, clinical practica, and in the use of grand rounds.
  • To obtain global presence through outstanding teaching, research, and service.
  • To engage in teaching, scholarly activities, the promotion of evidence-based practice, and the pursuit of continuous professional development.
  • To offer diagnostic and rehabilitative services to those persons in the community who have speech, hearing, or language problems.
  • To promote the intellectual growth and professional development of all students in the programs.

Minimum Student Competencies:

  • To demonstrate oral and written communication skills across the curriculum consistent with existing Departmental requirements and professional standards.
  • To develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes for entry into professional practice in Speech-Language Pathology and for future scholarly pursuits.
  • To develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes for state licensure, teacher certification, and professional certification by the American Speech Language and Hearing Association
