Philosophy, Mission and Program Goals

The mission of the Department of Physical Therapy is to provide a quality physical therapy education in a multicultural and evidence–based teaching and learning environment. The program will prepare graduates who practice autonomously and collaboratively exemplifying integrity, compassion, and excellence with a special focus on the needs of disadvantaged, underserved, and minority populations. The faculty and graduates will contribute to the profession and to the community through scholarship, service and leadership. The program will be known as a center of excellence training global leaders in physical therapy practice, education, scholarship and service.

Education and Training

  1. Graduates demonstrate skills necessary to practice autonomously with competence, integrity, and compassion in a variety of settings across the life span.
  2. Graduates will communicate effectively and appropriately, in a culturally sensitive manner with diverse populations including colleagues, patients, and the public.

Research and Knowledge Creation

  1. The graduate will critically analyze published literature and utilize the best available evidence to inform his/her practice.

Leadership and Community Service

  1. Graduates will demonstrate a commitment to service to the profession, patients, and the community.
