Philosophy
The Faculty in the Hampton University Physical Therapy Program hold the following values and beliefs with respect to physical therapy entry-level education:
-
Faculty are committed to the training and development of competent entry-level generalist physical therapists who are leaders in the profession and prepared to engage in autonomous practice with integrity and compassion.
-
Faculty believe that the didactic education of a physical therapy student is best delivered in a multicultural environment that is representative of the diversity of the nation and future patients and clients.
-
Faculty believe that the development of professional behaviors in students is essential and includes an appreciation and respect for individual and cultural differences.
-
Faculty value serving the disadvantaged and underserved people in a society and are committed to modeling and instilling this belief in physical therapy program students.
-
Because the physical therapy profession is dynamic and constantly evolving through research and discovery, the faculty believe that a physical therapist will always be engaged in lifelong learning and is responsible for using the best available evidence to deliver physical therapy services.
Mission
The Mission of the Hampton University Department of Physical Therapy is to provide contemporary physical therapist education in a multicultural learning environment with a special focus on systemically marginalized, under-represented, and under-resourced populations. The program will prepare its graduates to practice autonomously and collaboratively exemplifying integrity, compassion, and lifelong learning. The faculty and graduates will advance the profession and community through leadership, research, scholarship and service.
